Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a summertime staple! It's high in Vitamin C, magnesium, has good amounts of Vitamin A, potassium, and water. Each part of the watermelon has properties and is nutrient rich for our bodies. The seeds have minerals our bodies need; even the rind can be saved and used in stir fries to add extra fiber into your diet.
Hydration can be a key to feeling good. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramping, constipation, and other health issues. Since watermelon is 92% water, it's an easy way to help stay hydrated. If you have a hard day's work in the heat or feel more tired from your workout, adding a bit of salt to your watermelon can boost your body's electrolytes and carbohydrates. Watermelon is considered to be a heart healthy food as it protects against Cardiovascualar Disease. It can also help individuals who struggle with high blood pressure. Eating watermelon on a regular basis can help prevent cancer, diabetes, and obesity. However, one with diabetes should be mindful of the sugar content in watermelon.
Side effects from eating too much watermelon may occur. Just like anything, moderation is key. Watermelon may cause more migraines to those prone to them, increase symptoms of IBS in some individuals, and people with allergies to grass and/or ragweed may have reactions.
